Instant training improvement tips: Jack3d Snacks – Trail Mix

January 09, 2014

I suspect a confession is required or possibly best termed a ‘correction’ that applies to many dedicated athletes.
I do not per se ‘diet’ but rather make use of healthy food choices that provide my body the nutrition it requires.
Hence, there are no boxes of man-made processed chemicals that derail my efforts. Nor is a ‘cheat meals’ part of the training equation or a ‘reward’. Don’t ‘cheat’ your development with poor food. Not once, not ever.
Poor quality food ‘cheats’ growth and has no place in the dedicated athletes life.

Equally, and with specific reference to my use of the word ‘life’, I have chosen healthy foods throughout my life. My parents were responsible and helped solidify my health and future by promoting healthy food into my formative years.
Eating healthy is not a fad but a style of life.

Healthy food is not only nutritious but great tasting and for that matter the perfect snack.
As far as ‘perfect’ snack, one that I have taken in many sporting adventures from mountaintops to surfing and sidelines is the following ‘trail mix’.
When purchasing these items please only purchase within your budget but with respects to the honey ensure this is ‘raw’ honey.
• ½ + cup ‘raw’ honey
• 4½ – 5 cups organic rolled oats
• ½ cup wheat germ
• 1 teaspoon fresh cinnamon (you can naturally increase this to taste). It will take more time but I prefer to purchase the raw bark or cinnamon sticks and shave off the cinnamon
• 1/3 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/3 cups sunflower seeds
• 1/3 cups sesame seeds
• 1/3 cup almonds (buy whole and pound into pieces)
• 1/3 cup walnuts (shell & pound into pieces)
• 1/4 cup dried apricots (chopped)
• 1/4 cup dried blueberries
• 1/4 cup dried cherries or cranberries
• 1/4 cup currants
• 1/3 cup organic pomegranate or apple juice, depending upon availability. If making yourself retain the pulp for additional baking
Blend dry ingredients together. Warm the honey, preferably in double boiler, slowly. Once the honey is warm, add juice (this will help bind) with the dry mix until blended. Evenly spread mix over large cookie sheet and bake at 135 C / 275 F for twenty-five minutes stirring every five minutes.
Eat well, eat healthy and remember this is a style of life and where your dreams turn into reality.
